In my speech classroom, I serve over 60 students with a variety of language goals such as speech sounds, proper lip placement, phonics, socioemotional/ facial expression skills, and lip reading. When learning phonics and speech sounds, proper modeling and visual prompting are critical as students learn how to imitate and produce accurate sounds. Lip reading and facial cues are also important for students with low motor-speech disorders or who are hard of hearing. In order to provide this modeling and visual prompting, and to allow students to use facial cues and lip reading when producing sounds, my scholars will require masks with a clear viewing window. This will make it possible for them to see my cues, and will allow me to see their lip placement and facial expressions as they produce the sounds. The Dawn dish soap and anti-fog spray will help me prep the masks for student use so that they do not fog up.
