I teach in a partial language immersion school. I have 26 K5 students in the morning and a new group of 26 in the afternoon. When the children are with me, I provide all of their literacy and social studies work in English. They have math and science with a Spanish speaking teacher. These lively 5 and 6 years olds have told me that "We want to listen and learn and be curious so we can learn to read. We want to learn to read so that our Mommies and Daddies will not always have to read to us. We want to learn to read people’s stories and bedtime stories, so we can read to our brothers and sisters and families and friends." Because I only have my children for half a day, I try to immerse them in literacy activities every minute of our time together. My students come from varied backgrounds; some come having never heard stories and books while others are read to daily. I use the listening center, daily volunteer readers, and every minute I can find to read them books.
