Our self contained classroom does not get much exposure to the rest of the school. To get my students involved in the school community, I've decided to have them run a classroom business. Our school is located in Phoenix, AZ so we've decided on a lemonade business. My students will create our business's name, the logo, the menu, and the prices. Every week each student will have a job for our business. Some students will practice reading by reading the instructions. Some will practice fine motor skills by pouring items in the pitchers. Some will practice social skills by going to deliver the lemonade to staff members. Not only will this business allow my students to be seen in their school community, but it will allow them to interact socially with people they haven't been able to, learn the basics of running a business, identify and count money in a real life setting, and read and follow multiple step directions.
