Technology is a wonderful thing. It has helped my students explore the world outside the classroom and to visit places many of them may never have the opportunity to see in person. It is one part of what they need to be successful. Educational games are another. Engaging board games that teach content while helping to develop social skills are an additional important component in our classroom environment. My students are not only working to learn the academic content of 4th grade. They are also working to learn to be a part of community: to interact with others, to resolve conflict and to work together for common goals. The materials we are requesting will help them develop financial and vocabulary skills to better enable them to respond to the academic challenges they face. Many students have no practical experience with money so they struggle when asked to do related math problems. An in-class cash register and play money will allow us to develop these skills by creating and sustaining a classroom economy. A great number have limited opportunities to build academic vocabulary. Word games, such as "I have, who has", "Wordical" and "Mathological Liar" will help them to build such vocabulary.
