When reading is challenging, kiddos tend to dislike it and find ways to avoid it. By making high interest books available to all students at all reading levels, every student will be able to find a book they can read for enjoyment. Our school library does not offer many graphic novels or books that are high interest yet at a lower reading level. If a kiddo already struggles to read, it can be even more disheartening or even embarrassing to have to get books from lower levels that seem childish. By having a wide variety of hi-lo books and graphic novels in my classroom library, I hope each student will be able to find a book they can love reading! Once a kiddo finds some success with a book, they tend to be more open to trying different books. The more they read, the better reader they will become!
