We all know that it is imperative to read to our children when they are young, but why shouldn't we read to older children as well? Reading aloud, or listening to someone read, provides an excellent model of reading which promotes literacy and language development and helps to foster a lifelong love of books and reading. Research shows that all students, especially those with learning difficulties, become better readers and writers when given the opportunity to use both their eyes and their ears to read a book. Having this project funded would allow me to set up and maintain a Listen to Reading center in my classroom. This center will allow the students to use the audiobooks (books on CD) and listen to many memorable and inspirational stories such as Esperanza Rising, The Mouse and the Motorcycle, Bud, Not Buddy, The One and Only Ivan, James and the Giant Peach, and many more. These are quality pieces of literature that students would not have access to without this opportunity.
