A small group carefully studies their stream table, carefully adjusting the water flow and discussing in excited tones whether what is forming is a canyon or an alluvial fan. Students shift in their seats, mesmerized by a virtual field trip of Ellis Island projected at the front of the room. These are examples of the thoughtful, engaging lessons I provide for my students, but curriculum is only one factor that affects student achievement. Flexible seating, such as stools, yoga balls and wobblesits, will allow students to work in different locations in the room comfortably and focused. A recent study in the UK (Barrett, Zhang, Davies & Barrett, 2015) revealed that flexibility in the classroom accounts for 25% of improvement in academic performance.
