A couple of years ago, I spent a week at an ArtsPowered Schools training. Since then, the other teachers and I have wanted to add the arts in to as much of our school day as possible. We created a "switch" time in our busy schedules every Thursday in order to stretch our student's minds and include something we, as teachers, are passionate about. I love teaching students how to properly use watercolors and allow them to explore different techniques. They are thrilled when we use the ever popular crayon with watercolors, but then dig deeper as to why it works and what other tools do we have that create the same result. My students need decent watercolor sets, paintbrushes, and updated water cups. They enjoy trying these new techniques in a "free to create" environment. We also talk a lot about evaporation and why we would want to leave our paints open to dry. We laminate their end results so they may preserve their art!
