Academic success depends upon good reading skills. Those skills begin with WORDS! Snap Cards show engaging pictures of actions and things along with words that students must learn to recognize. They are a springboard for physical expression as students can act out the words. Creating this visual and physical connection to words strengthens learning. Students learn to recognize words as well as understand their meaning- fostering reading fluency and comprehension. “Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.” This often cited quote sums up abundant research that shows the way students learn best - by physical interaction, by doing! The more senses we engage, the better the outcome. This is especially true for students whose primary learning channel is physical or visual; or who come from families that do not speak English as a primary language; or who face the terrific stressors of poverty. A physical involvement with language can solidify its meaning. Think of the depth and beauty of Shakespearean dialog as it leaps to life when acted onstage. Think of the way visuals like film can enhance our appreciation of a great book. A picture is worth a thousand words, is it not? Marrying visuals and movement with words deepens our connection to them and is particularly useful as children transition from a concrete world to one full of abstract symbols. The Snap Cards marry language with pictures, and suggest movement. The word sliders give children a hands-on interaction with words. The use of whisper phones allow children to practice reading in a classroom setting. Children naturally read aloud since they are practicing the sound of what they see while reading. It brings the word to life and personalizes the experience because they use their own voices!
