Flexible seating is important in education because it gives students a choice in which kind of learning space works best for them. Flexible seating works well with students while they are learning to collaborate with one another, communicating and engaging in critical conversations with their peers. Flexible seating changes the whole environment of a classroom. When you walk into a classroom of students who have flexible seating, it looks very different than the traditional classroom with chairs and desks. My students have very few options in my classroom for flexible seating, as I purchased a few seats as a new classroom teacher. I would love enough flexible seating for each child in my classroom to use throughout the school day. The flexible seating I have chosen for this project is Kinder round cushions, metal stack stools, and surf portable lap desks. The Kinder Cushions are great for flexible seating. Students are able to move the cushions around the room where they feel most comfortable and ready to learn. The cushions can go on any chair or they can be used on the classroom rug. I also added metal stack stools to our class project. The metal stools would replace the standard chairs at my station rotation table and student desks. When students are using stools, they are able to wiggle and move around without feeling constricted to one seated position at a desk. My students can work at higher tables in the classroom with the stools, where they can easily focus on hands-on learning and communicating with their peers. The last type of flexible seating I added to my project is surf lap desks. These desks are used on the classroom rug and are great for students working on computers or even writing a story in a comfortable space.
