My students come from diverse populations. The majority of them are African American, Hispanic, or Asian. All are on the free government lunch plan and come from incomes that are way below the average income in America. In front of our building we have crime, gangs, violence, drugs, as well as a few unfortunate homicides. I try to keep my kids away from these deterrents through sports and activities. The New York streets that are in front of our school and their neighborhoods are tough and influential. Keeping students in the building for the first hour after school is vital for them to succeed. My students are passionate kids who love sports and activities. Sports provide my kids with motivation and inspiration besides a healthy mind and body. They deserve the chance to better themselves.
