Students don't learn the same as they did 20 years ago, and, as a result, classrooms are no longer filled with rows of desks facing the front waiting for a teacher to lecture for an entire hour. Instead, students are choosing how they learn and what they learn, and they also need the opportunity to choose the environment in which they learn. Flexible seating promotes better learning and options for students with diverse learning needs and creates an environment and space that feels less like a traditional classroom. Flexible seating has been present in offices throughout the country for several years, and it is time that classrooms catch up. People in the workforce don't have to cramp their bodies into a tiny chair attached to an even smaller work space. Instead, they are given the opportunity to adjust chairs, get in and out of their workspace easily, and spread their work out on a space large enough to accommodate their needs. This should be the same for a school, especially for high school students if we are truly preparing them for life after high school and college. This project will offer my ELA students a workspace that accommodates their needs. I hope to remove the tiny desks and put in a variety of tables built for their sizes and comfort. The tables and stools will offer the opportunity for them to focus on their work rather than constantly changing their positions in order to feel comfortable.
