Let's be honest, being a sixth grader is not easy. It's the age where everyone and everything is changing. Friends are no longer interested in the same old things, and school life has become more intense. There are many questions and wonderings that need answers. Guidance is needed, but not always sought. They wonder where they can look for answers. Well, I've found that books are always tend to hold many of the answers. "Wonder" offers many ways to teach and guide young adolescents. I plan to use this class set of books to read with my students in our guided literature circles. The main character in "Wonder" experiences many hardships and challenges that are common to this particular age group. In our literature circles, we read and discuss what is going on in the book, and take a deeper look into what can be learned from the book. Students are put into small groups. This allows students to feel more comfortable and more free to express what they have learned from each week's reading from the book. The students can also help each other clarify parts of the book that they do not understand or have misinterpreted. Throughout the project all students are actively engaged in their reading and practicing strong communication skills. In addition to building communication skills, team collaboration skills, and reading comprehension, my students will also be able to learn how to compare and contrast a book and a movie. Once we have finished reading "Wonder," I will have the students watch the movie. While watching the movie, they will be comparing and contrasting the similarities and differences of the book and movie. In today's world, this is a strong skill to have with all the movies that are based off books and/or real life events.
