When it comes to the everyday activities I have my students do, I give them oodles of choices. They can choose during math centers, reading centers and they can choose (at this point in the year) what books are the best fit for them. So as education evolves and we give the students more choices each and every day to help them grow academically, behaviorally, and socially, why are we not giving them the choice of where they sit? I love my classroom. I have done everything I can on my own to give it a "homey" feeling so that my students feel safe and comfortable everyday when they come to school. I also love how much movement I try to include in my classroom whether that means moving around from one center to the next or doing a brain break. The one thing that I cannot get on board with is making a student sit in a rock hard chair for hours everyday. No matter how much movement you try to incorporate in your classroom, sitting in those hard chairs to do "desk work" is inevitable. This is why I want to bring flexible seating options into my classroom! I have many wiggle worms in my classroom who would benefit in so many ways from the chairs and stools that I am requesting. It is proven that flexible seating enhances a students/classrooms' health, feeling of community, communication and commitment to learning. Please consider donating to my first Donors Choose project and helping the future stay on task, healthy and alert!
