Flexible seating allows students to choose where they work and change their location and positions as needed. Some students lack exercise and movement; flexible seating benefits their health that increases their metabolism, oxygen flow to the brain, blood flow and core strength. Because the resource room exhibits some minor behavioral issues, these seating options help with sensory and behavioral issues. Students can make a choice to find a comfortable chair to sit in during classroom activities and instruction. Students work best when they have some control over their environment. Flexible seating engages students and they become less disruptive to their peers. Flexible seating options stimulate students’ sense of touch. This type of stimulation can help children focus and process information. Sensory input is especially helpful for students with ADHD, ADD, and ASD. Wobble stools are the most popular flexible classroom seating option, followed up by yoga balls and seat cushions. These seating options will be used for their personal desks, small-group activities and at their stations. They will have options to pick something different each day according to their own needs. Students develop awareness of what type of seating they need.
