Every year, rather than assign our students one book per grade, we offer a wide variety of at least 30 summer reading books for our students to choose from. Students have the opportunity to read memoirs, fantasy, realistic fiction--you name it! There is always at least one book on that list for everyone. When they return to school in September, teachers lead discussion groups for each book so students have the chance to chat about what they read with other students and teachers who read the same book. It is a great opportunity for high school students of all different ages and backgrounds to meet new friends and connect with teachers they may not know! This year, my students have chosen, for example, a poignant novel written in verse about a 15 year-old boy who experiences a tragic loss, a sci-fi novel about a female video game hacker, and a timely novel about young refugees from different eras tied together by their harrowing experiences. However, students must procure a copy of the book on their own, whether they purchase it, borrow it, or find it in our school or local libraries. I know that most of the 22 students in these two classes of mine struggle to find the means to get their books, so this project is a way for me to ensure that every student gets a copy of the book they chose. There's nothing better than cracking open a brand new copy of a book you've been dying to read!
