My classroom is set up with 1 hour of center rotations. The students have their choice of the center they would like to work at, and the most popular area is the dramatic play area. Dramatic play is important to students because it teaches self-regulation and allows students to have an emotional outlet. The grocery store and diner will allow for much discussion and compromise. Dramatic play allows children to sort through difficult emotions and practice daily living. Dramatic play supports literacy. Dramatic play can also increase reading comprehension. Kids often choose to act out scenes from a favorite storybook. This gives them a deeper understanding of the narrative structure and character motivations found in familiar stories. The lemonade stand will offer many opportunities to use literacy through the different themes that are taught. Dramatic play teaches conflict resolution. Both unstructured and structured dramatic play offer teachable moments about conflict resolution. Disagreements occur during unstructured dramatic play, which offers a chance for kids to work through their differences and arrange a compromise.
