My students are coming from homes where many of them do not get the same experiences as many other children do. As a result, their vocabulary and knowledge of the world is very limited. The majority of my students live in the trailer park that is adjacent to the school, or in the low income apartments across the street. Some of them have never been to the zoo, or held crayons, or had a book read to them. Some have never even left the city limits. Books and music open up their world to new places and new words that they may have never heard before, but are encountered in a way that is in a context that they can understand. Music makes learning fun and relevant for young children, and it gives them the opportunity to move their bodies and actively engage in the lesson.
