My students are difficult to engage, though the excitement I see when they have real, physical materials to learn from inspires me. But our budget is not strong enough to supply the literature I need. We often ask parents to buy a copy of the books we are reading, and often times they cannot afford to do so. So we rely on finding PDF versions that they can read off of a screen. I have seen first-hand that this does not properly engage my students. As Ray Bradbury said, “A book is a loaded gun in the house next door... Who knows who might be the target of the well-read man?”. My students need to be armed with literature in order to succeed in society. And how can one truly appreciate a book about the importance of preserving real, physical literature, if they are trying to read it off of a screen? This book is not only captivating, but it is completely relevant to our modern times and will prove to inspire my tough-to-reach students.
