This past year, I decided to dive in head first with flexible seating. You might ask, "What is flexible seating?" Flexible seating, to me, is giving each student the opportunity to choose their work space at which they feel they will have the most success in learning for that day. The students choose their seats or spots daily depending on how they feel and where they would like to work for that day. This allows them choice, freedom, and ownership. Flexible seating gives student the valuable opportunity to take ownership and responsibility of their learning. Think about how you produce your best work on a daily basis. Is it sitting in a hard, plastic chair? Is it sitting at a 5 in. by 4 in. desk? Maybe, maybe not. These days for many students, it's not. Students do their best when they have the opportunity to make their own choices and when they feel comfortable. For those students who enjoy sitting on the floor, the laptop stand trays will give them the opportunity to have a solid work space that is mobile and comfortable. The cafe table will allow students to be able to stand and work. The dining room table brings in the welcoming feeling that I want students to have while in my classroom. These options along with the others that I have asked for will increase student learning due to the fact that my students will be able to pick their best learning environment.
