The goals for this grant are to bring accurate and real-world experiences into the classroom. Students will be able to use their collected data to evaluate and analyze their own designs of objects in motion both mathematically and scientifically looking at the relationships and correlations among data, manipulating physics equations and drawing scientific conclusions. Having this Photogate timer as a whole class support will provide all students with a real-world experience they might not otherwise be allowed until high school or beyond. For example, one mini unit in Physics (among many) is the S.T.E.M. challenge of building the fastest roller coaster using marbles (coasters), PVC pipe (base of the roller coaster), and insulation piping (the track of the roller coaster). Previously, students try to use meter sticks and cell phone timers to collect data. The data they collect using their cell phone timers is of student reaction time, starting and stopping the phone, not the actual speed or acceleration of the marble. With this Photogate timer, student groups will be able to collect accurate data to solve the S.T.E.M. challenge using all of the components S.T.E.M. embodies.
