The steam roller provides the student with what is called proprioception, which is a form of sensory input which sends messages to the central nervous system for calming and organizing. This helps the students better tolerate their very overstimulating classroom environment. Proprioception is a tool that most individuals use for calming, but just don't know! The students I work with do not know how to use tools to help regulate their systems for a more optimal level of attention for better learning opportunities. Children who are on the Autism spectrum struggle to tolerate and process their sensory environment. You can imagine how overwhelming the school environment is to them! They need a variety of tools to be provided to them the help them during the day. Many tools are DIY, but the steam roller is one that cannot be recreated without the actual tool! It was designed and created by Temple Grandin, who herself has Autism and struggles to process her environment.
