Got readers? I do! I do! My third graders love to read. I encourage my kiddos to recommend the books they have read to other students in my room. This opens up an opportunity for student-to-student dialogue. Their conversations are filled with joyous retellings with the characters they liked and events they loved from the plot. One of the questions I often hear is as part of these conversations is, “Who was the author? ‘Cause I want to read more books by him (her)?” Funding my project will help answer this question as well as allow me to utilize high-interest, non-fiction books in a small group configurations. Having already purchased the book Who is Roald Dahl?, I was able to pique the interest of my voracious readers to ecourage them to read Dahl’s classics: Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, James and The Giant Peach, The Twits, Esio Trot, Matilda, and more.. Funding my project for books about authors will further entice my students to read the classics written by Dr. Seuss, Beatrix Potter, and Maurice Sendak. The goal is to have students read the classic books (Tale of Peter Rabbit, Where The Wild Things Are, and McElligot’s Pool) prior to reading the Who Was series books about the authors. Learning about the authors' lives helps my students realize that a real person wrote these books and that their own personal lives influences their writings. I am confident that the success I had with the Roald Dahl book will work again for my kiddos, and I will once again be listening to them saying, “I want to read more books by him (her)."
