Flexible seating options in the classroom provide an unlimited number of benefits which enhance student learning. We are requesting patio tables and chairs, a rug and cushions. One benefit of flexible seating is that it provides students with some level of choice. Students have a chance to pick where and with whom they sit which gives them a sense of empowerment and control over their learning environment. Secondly, flexible seating options promote students' physical health. When students are allowed to rock, bounce, or stand they are getting the movement needed for their overall health. In addition, a comfortable student is a productive student. Students that are comfortable in their learning environment are more focused and less distracted by outside stimuli. These options also promote students' sense of touch/sensory input which can be especially helpful to students with ADD/ADHD. Lastly, flexible seating options within the classroom help to create a sense of community and collaboration while helping students commit to their learning. Traditional classrooms with desks only can make students more territorial. Flexible seating encourages students to be less rigid, more flexible and more likely to work collaboratively with their classmates. These seating options encourage students to move about the room easily into pairs, small groups or as a whole group.
