My demographic is small-town, rural, and mixed Caucasian and Hispanic percentages. So many of our students have never experienced life in an urban/suburban situation and they have no idea the bias and prejudice that can exist beyond the surrounding counties. This novel would allow my students to see that racial bias still exists and can happen anywhere at any time. As well, this novel would assist my students in becoming aware of how quickly people judge one another and how one's life can be unfairly influenced by others. I'm planning to pair this with To Kill a Mockingbird in order for students to realize those false accusations still occur today.
