Southside Occupational Academy serves students with a wide range of disabilities who are aged eighteen to twenty-one. I teach a simulated pet store class that provides students with a unique learning experience. Students are learning how to take care of a variety of animals, spend time socializing with those animals, complete pet store duties like taking inventory, and receive community based instruction at pet stores. Caring for their class pets has produced a sense of responsibility and has brought an awareness of the needs of others (both animals and humans). Our school also has a work program that provides our students with an opportunity to continue to learn and refine vital vocational and life skills at community work sites like Navy Pier. Our goal for each student is to gain the skills necessary to become as independent as possible within their communities upon graduation.
