I am a science teacher in an urban high school in Newark, NJ. My high school students are mostly from a disadvantaged socioeconomic background. I presently teach Biology and Psychology, and am a member of the National Science Teachers Association and the American Psychological Association branch of the Society for the Teaching of Psychology. I try to provide my students with life skills and coping skills that they can take home with them in addition to their academic experience. Therefore, I try to encourage my students in various ways to enjoy creating art and to expose them to diversified music including classical. The advantages of an interdisciplinary approach to science that includes art promotes inclusiveness. Additionally, art helps students of all types to focus, and the quiet space created while producing artwork is much akin to mindfulness, which is proven to be therapeutic in many contexts.
