The books I am requesting for my students are popular YA fiction, non-fiction, and various other genres that deal with social, cultural, political, and personal topics that my students will be able to identify with. Many of these texts came "highly recommended" and contain topics that even the most reluctant reader would find interesting and choose to read. I am often asked by my 9th-grade students, "Does reading social media posts count as reading?" Research shows that many adolescents are simply not reading enough, lack the motivation to read, and have significantly worse reading skills than they did a decade ago. In an effort to support my low-income students' diverse literacy-based needs, the donations for this project will provide additional opportunities for students to improve their reading comprehension and ultimately help them to become engaged life-long readers.
