My students are fourth graders at a Title I charter school in Michigan. Our school believes that all students can succeed, regardless of race or socioeconomic status and we work diligently from the day our scholars enter kindergarten until their graduation to ensure college-readiness. Our school does not test students before admitting them; it is a simple lottery system. Academically, we meet students where they are and move them to where they need to be. Geographically and logistically, parents make the commitment to get their students to our school each day because they believe in our mission. Our scholars come from many different cities and neighborhoods to be part of our school community. Presently, the recession has hit our state particularly hard and even in light of some positive trends, many families are unable to provide their students with additional school supplies at this point in the year.
