I teach grades 7-12 in a self-contained special education classroom. This means that my students spend all day in the special education classroom because they have multiple or more severe disabilities; autism, intellectual disabilities, learning disabilities, behavior problems; we have it all. All of my students are working at least five grade levels below their same-age peers in reading, writing and math. Most are further behind than that. We focus not only on literacy and math skills, but also life skills such as preparing simple meals, tying shoes, cleaning, and repetitive job skills. Our school serves a very low socioeconomic population. 100% of our students get free breakfast and lunch. Many come from broken homes and need as much support as possible from the school to meet basic and not-so-basic needs.
