I teach in a large urban academic school. Our students are among the brightest and most motivated teens in our urban area. They come from every neighborhood in the city and many nations of the world. Many commute for over an hour to attend our school and be challenged with creative classes that prepare them for higher education. They embrace projects that help them develop real-world knowledge and skills with enthusiasm. Students frequently take their research and final products in directions that their teachers never imagined. I've had students write fantastic historical fiction, win awards for videos and websites, and perform dramatic interpretations of "What if...?" scenarios. The challenge for me is to provide relevant and powerful ways to challenge my students to act as historians, and to help develop skills and habits that inspire a life of inquiry.
