After 13 years of teaching in districts where an influx of technology has aided in classroom instruction to increase student engagement, I took a position at the HJM Middle School in Manchester. This school has a great culture that fosters a great learning environment, but severely lacks in funding for technology to assist in classroom instruction. In my many years of teaching, I have used graphing calculators to capture the attention of students or simply help drive home a point to further clarify a lesson. I feel that students need to see the lessons I teach come alive, and this is done for the most part by the use of different types of technology. State and National standards have demanded more of an understanding of the topics being taught in the classroom rather than just the ability to solve them. One of the biggest issues that I have seen over the past few years has been students being fed data, charts and graphs, not knowing where it comes from and therefore causing a lack an understanding of the data or the ability to interpret the data. By allowing students to gather their own data through a motion sensor or allowing the students to interpret data through the means of a table or graph that they generate on a graphing calculator, students grasp a much deeper understanding of the use of data as it applies to mathematical concepts. This technology is currently not available to the students of my school. In order to help a school that is struggling financially as well as academically, I need your help to purchase this technology. These students deserve the same opportunities to fall in love with math as did my other students.
