Studies show that students who are reading below grade level in third grade are not as successful with their reading or schooling in higher grades. Students who are not given rich literature and solid high interest expository text, like the Phineas Gage book I would like to use with my students, lack an appreciation and love for reading and books over all. This book in particular can be difficult for some due to the vocabulary, but with the enthusiasm for the topic of brain science, even my low readers will devour this book and be able to apply their reading skills to the text. Being able to provide texts that are relevant and help to build the stamina of strong readers is the main goal of getting these books. These books that I would like to use in my classroom will serve as a catalyst to build enthusiasm and inquiry of reading in my students. Fish in a Tree is a quality text that provides a story of grit, compassion and true friendship. Providing my students real books to hold, practice with and discuss with each other will develop life long learners and readers. My students are avid readers who can sometimes get lost with reading concepts and it can be difficult to find text that they can apply their skills to. I have a wide range of reading levels in my classroom and this can be difficult to reach all learners’ abilities, but they can find common ground with these texts with proper scaffolding and guidance.
