Unfortunately, with such a big focus on subjects that are tested, social studies is often left out. This year, we have been reading books that focus on different historical events to expand their knowledge and understanding of the world. From the American Revolution to World War Two, the students have been captivated by the books we have read thus far, and have proceeded to do much research on these subjects to further their knowledge. It has been fascinating as students have come to terms with slavery, learned about the KKK, as well as the horrors of World War Two. While the focus was to help them learn about social studies in a fun and engaging way, it has turned into much more than that. It has introduced students to both different genres and periods of time. Students are rushing to the school library to check out the one other copy of the book at school, to follow along as we read our class read aloud books. I believe it would benefit my students to have at least half of a class set of each of these books so students can follow along in pairs and not only learn, but also practice their reading skills by both listening and seeing words. Please help these students learn to love to read!
