When I look at my students and what I expect of them, I like to put myself in their place...would I enjoy this? Would I be engaged? Would I completely tune this out? I find that students, especially those in the primary grades, have a hard time concentrating and doing their best work because they do not feel comfortable in the seats they are expected to sit in. Not every child learns the same way, so we can't expect them all to sit them same way either! Flexible classrooms give students a choice in what kind of learning space works best for them, and help them to work collaboratively, communicate, and engage in critical thinking. My goal for this upcoming school year is to provide my students with a flexible classroom, where they have the opportunity to choose what kind of seating works best for them throughout the school day. For independent practice, students would have the option to sit in a regular chair at a table, sit on a small cushion or comfy floor seat on the floor at a lower table, sit in a bean bag chair, stand at a standing desk, sit on a wiggle seat, or sit on a yoga ball. I am requesting four bean bag chairs and four comfy floor seats in this project. Creating a designated spot in the classroom where children can read and work in comfort is essential because it helps them develop lifelong reading habits. With such literacy-heavy curriculum, this is growing to be more important each day! With your help, this vision could become a reality. Thank you so much in advance for helping us learn!
