My classroom serves as a safe space (when students just need to get away from stressful situations), a learning environment, a place for students to meet after/before school, a space for team building and mindfulness activities, and a yoga room for teachers. My classroom has come a long way; I had to transform an old computer lab and textbook storage room into a classroom of my own. Though I have made progress, I am not utilizing the space in my room as effectively as I can due to limited resources (expenses and furniture). Much of the furniture that I have currently have in there is falling apart and no longer in good condition. Students and teachers who walk into my classroom, feel a sense of belonging because of the physical space I have created. Now that we have new touch screen displays in our classrooms, there is no need for me to have a teacher's desk anymore in the back of my classroom. I would like to open that space up to create an additional reading area surrounded with books from my classroom library. Students fight throughout the year to sit on my couch and futon. The addition of furniture and a rug to my classroom will allow more students access to flexible seating during instruction, and group/independent work time. Why is a well-designed arrangment of the classroom important? Every square foot has a purpose in the classroom and the more opportunities we allow for students to be in creative physical spaces, the less likely they are to feel constrained to the traditional classroom walls. A chaotic room will make students feel harried. A cluttered room makes the environment feel disorganized. A room with empty walls lacks creativity. I hope you will help me reach this goal!
