Creating a flexible seating environment for my students will give them the power to choose where they sit and learn best. In a traditional classroom, students are expected to sit at desks while they are learning and completing independent work. This type of seating is not the most beneficial for my young students. At the age of six and seven, children are active and love to move. I have found in my experience that the traditional desk does not cater to my students with ADHD, ADD or ASD or my students that just want to be more comfortable or would like to choose where they work. The opportunity to sit on things like yoga balls or a wobble stool will allow my children with extra energy to move without distraction to others while completing tasks. Floor seating with lap desks and rockers give students more choice then just sitting at a desk. Giving my students the choice to sit on yoga balls, wobble stools, rockers or on the floor with lap desks will allow my students to stay focused longer. This will benefit their learning and increase the growth they make academically and emotionally throughout the year.
