I want to build a classroom library that will give encourage my students to read by giving them CHOICES and introduce them to new ideas and ways of thinking. A well-stocked library would meet the needs of students of diverse readers with diverse interests. My incoming students, already identified as dropout risks, often feel like outsiders in an academic setting. I want to build an atmosphere of family and community within my classroom, and what better way to do that than by sharing a common library? Sharing books, ideas, and experiences with one another will help foster a sense of belonging and responsibility. Our school is in a rural small town, and many of my students have never ventured beyond its boundaries. I chose titles such as All American Boys, The 57 Bus, and Speak because these books encourage discussion and provide insight into the struggles students face both inside and outside the classroom.
