As a teacher, I have been given an extraordinary chance to shape the way young people view and appreciate reading, and my 5th grade students always rise to the challenge to learn and try new things. I'm asking for class-set copies of several grade and interest appropriate novels that my class can read together to help foster their creative writing as well their understanding of greater themes and ideas and how they relate to the world they live in. I strive to create a community or young readers and writers within my classroom, but in order to do that they need inspiration! It's learning to understand the feeling and meaning behind the words on the page that makes someone a life-long reader. It's my hope that through the model of these mentor texts (Freak the Mighty, Tuck Everlasting, and Holes), my students will gain not only knowledge of literacy skills, but also a passion for reading that will continually guide them into choosing books of their own.
