Having different genres and updated novels to choose from will help my students to become better readers. They will have new novels that THEY enjoy! Novels such as Esperanza Rising and Wonder. Many of my students have not read an entire novel independently because of their difficulties with reading. We will use these novels for independent reading and in guided reading groups. During guided reading my students use their reading strategies they have learned and apply them to the novels that we read. The more we "actively" read the more we understand. These new novels can help them to become more fluent in their reading and more easily comprehend the text before them.
