English is such an incredibly unique subject because it allows students to learn about humanity, cultures, and about themselves. English class is more than just writing and reading; it is about learning hidden truths, finding a connection to someone else, and sharing perspective. A book's true purpose isn't to only read a story, but to experience life lessons through the pages in a safe and engaging classroom environment. Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" is a tool to challenge and motivate students towards higher level thinking, engaging, and learning. This specific drama has been able to bridge connections with young adults throughout time with its characters, conflicts, and morals. It brings up "real life" issues and allows for healthy discussion over key topics that students feel passionately about. Please help assist me on my journey to support and advocate for my students. They truly deserve the opportunity to experience Shakespeare and the life lessons his characters highlight with the proper language support to assist their reading comprehension. Not only will this version of "Romeo and Juliet" assist them in their reading, but it will promote their love for language as they expand their vocabulary, foster deeper connections to characters, and allow them to see similarities between modern pieces and other cultures.
