My 12th grade students will be starting the year with a study of culture through close reading of the novel The Life of Pi, as well as graphic novels. Students will be evaluating identity and investigating how identity is shaped by personal culture. Uncovering personal culture is a lifelong endeavor, one that can be ever enriched by continued experience with cultures outside of one's own; books will serve as vehicle for this discovery during this unit. Next year twelfth graders will read and discuss culture in The Life of Pi, leading to and informing a culminating project where students will write personal essays about their own cultural identity. Having access to their own personal copy of The Life of Pi throughout the entirety of this unit will allow students to dig deep into the text and really use as a tool for their own reflection.
