My 10th grade ELL students will learn African dance techniques and choreography in a small ELL class to help build confidence, inspire students and increase their intelligence. Students will also learn about African culture and how their ancestors created dance from their culture. They love music and to dance! This unit will really inspire them. I hope to improve social relationships among genders and cultivate collaboration, respect and compassion among students. They will learn about Nigerian culture and aspects of the dance they are learning and how it relates to the African culture. Students start out shy and afraid of trying new things, especially dancing. Last year, students loved learning how to African dance as it improves coordination and once they learn a few steps, they realize that they are good at it and dancing! That is how it inspires confidence. Having a dance teacher come into our school helps them learn a new skill that they can use at home, school dances throughout their entire lives.
