Last year, you helped our 6th graders travel to St. Louis to explore the City Museum, and the trip made such a tremendous impact on them. This year, we hope to take our new crop of 6th graders on the same adventure, this time touring Washington University in St. Louis. For many, this is the first time they have ever left Memphis, and one of their first experiences of a college campus. According to Adela, one of my students from last year, "This trip is so cool because I have never been out of the city before, and I got to see a school I could go to when I am older." I hope to bring the same joy to our new students, and to expand their horizons. In fact, our high school has former 6th graders who are now seniors, applying to Wash U as their top choice--this trip has literally changed lives! On this trip, we will tour the Wash U campus and our students will get the awe-inspiring chance to sleep over at The City Museum. As a bonus, they’ll also check out the St. Louis Zoo! Providing this life-changing trip is not cheap, but it is imperative to us that no student pay. This way, all of our 6th graders are given an equal chance to participate, as economic status is not a factor. Due to a drastically changing educational landscape and state-level cost cutting, we no longer have the funds to make these trips happen within our school budget. The reality is that in order to provide this milestone for our KIPPsters--an opportunity that most students outside of low-income communities often take for granted--we need your help!
