Children who come from families that live in poverty have been read to for about 25 hours before Kindergarten (Berk, 2006, Newman, 2003). Providing these materials will help prevent my students from falling into this statistic. It will give them a chance to succeed in school and allow them to build their language skills and begin to use print concepts. One of the basic tools we need is a Bookshelf. This will give us a sturdy place to store our books. We will be able to organize the books better and keep them at the children's level for easy access. We are also in need of new books for our children. The donations for this project will help our children to improve their language and literacy skills. As a Head Start Teacher it is our obligation to help build literacy and language skills in our students to prepare them for school.
