We do not have many math manipulatives. Most critically low are manipulatives for fractions and general problem solving. Recently I attended a training showing how to use Cuisenaire Rods to help students make concrete examples of multi-step problems. Multi-step problems involving multiple operations are always difficult for 3rd graders. Being able to work with Cuisenaire Rods can help provide a more visible relationship between the operations. With the help of these particular manipulatives, students can over time gain a deeper understanding of how numbers and operations can work together. Plus, the ability to " see" the problem in a concrete way can help students who are struggling with abstract concepts.
