Every day my students are pulled in groups for a guided reading lesson that is on their individual level. I have requested sets of books that are on my students' reading level. During this time students are able to make connections to the text, ask and respond to questions and dive in and read! They are eager to find words they know, learn new vocabulary and celebrate their learning. Guided reading has significant beneficial effects on helping students develop reading skills. It is one of the most effective tools not only to improve a student's fundamental reading skills but also to help the student develop higher level comprehension skills. After we read these books, students are able to take the books home to continue to practice these skills they have learned at school with their parents. This is very important because many students do not have books they can read independently at home. Therefore, their practice stops at the end of the school day. Your donation to this project will help to improve my classroom by providing several books on many levels to empower learning for ALL students to enjoy while beginning their journey as readers. Readers are leaders! Having a wide variety of books will promote and provide a strong literacy foundation which will produce strong, independent readers.
