This year I want to explicitly focus on social emotional learning. I would like to engage my students in learning through picture books. I find that when students relate to a character they are able to have more meaningful conversations with their peers. It is important that our students know how to cheer for others, overcome failures, and express their emotions. In math particularly, I want my students to take risks and persevere. I will set aside time each week to discuss one of the pillars of social emotional learning. We will read these books throughout the year as a class and they will be in my library for students to revisit. These books will allow students to have a way to learn about social-emotional wellness.
