I teach a diverse group of students who need more opportunities to read books with characters that look like them. They need an opportunity to see themselves in characters so that they can be able to truly connect with a piece. Books with Latino characters, Asian characters, African-American characters, female characters, etc. I teach a diverse group of kids, Pre-AP to remediation, and one of my goals is to make sure my students have the chance to read more because they have a wide selection of books to choose from. One issue that I have noticed is that reading comprehension is low with students because they don’t read, and they don’t read because they can’t relate. I want to change that stigma in my classroom by creating a diverse library selection. If my classroom were adopted, I would create a diverse classroom of library with an array of books that would entice each and every student to read. The amount of books would increase the volume of books my students have access too, which allows them to find books that they would enjoy.
