Currently, my students work out of a basal reading series with little engagement or excitement. Students share these books, and there is no way for them to truly engage with the stories. Plus, there is nothing like holding an actual book in your hands to be able to re-learn to love to read. Over the years, I've seen this love slipping, and I want to bring it back by getting good literature in their hands! Titles like Gregor the Overlander, Rump, and The Lemonade War are engaging stories that also lead into other stories in a series. These are able to branched off of for thematic purposes, tying in non-fiction reading, as well. This allows students to truly engage in a topic- fantasy, fairy tale, economics, all across the curriculum spectrum!
